Visit Alaska: Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Kondike Gold KushVisit Alaska and spend your time at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park for a sense of what the pioneers felt when they flocked to this area looking for gold in 1897.

During the late 1800s, there was a huge economic depression and thousands of people sold everything they had to make their journey to Alaska in the hopes of striking gold and enjoying a prosperous life. This is what the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park commemorates.

Today, more than 3 million tourists travel to Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park every year and although the odds of finding gold are slim, they still want to recapture the feelings of the past.

Once you arrive, you will understand why this is one of the top places to visit in Alaska, not just because of the back-story, but also because it is an exceptionally beautiful state.

When you plan a visit to Alaska, you will not be disappointed, although there are many rural towns, there are also large, busy metropolitan areas. Their hotels have the same amenities you would expect to find elsewhere and the restaurants are spectacular.

However, the most fascinating aspect is being able to escape the big city and head out into the wilds and this is what you will find at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. It is a hiker’s dream, because of the rugged terrain and abundant wildlife.

There are only two ways to reach the park. The most popular is on foot. In fact, backpackers prefer this method and list this adventure as one of their favorite things to do in Skagway. You will not want to leave without first checking out their museum located in the Administrative building. Depending on how long your stay is, you can choose to also take a hike along one of the old gold rush trails. The trail, called Chilkoot, is 33 miles in length, which means it could take up to five days. You will need to prepare for an extended time outdoors and make sure you bring the proper equipment.

You can also book one of the Alaskan cruise tours and enter the park for a day of fun and excitement. Many choose this option because they do not have to worry about excessive gear. You only need comfortable footwear and the proper clothing to experience the park. Regardless of your point of entry, you are sure to make the most of your time.
